Press Release:

TCPA Statement to the Community

The beginning of summer is normally a time for us to be finalizing uniform designs, forming teams, building the schedule, connecting with partners, and a rising anticipation for a new season. This year, we have been monitoring the Covid-19 pandemic but have refrained from any definitive actions/announcements as we continued to gather information about what can and cannot be possible from a competition standpoint.

We often use the phrase “Our TCPA Family”. Those 8 weeks that we get to spend with one another in midsummer brings people together from all walks of life. No matter your age, race, or socio-economic status, you have a home on The Island where we can come together and celebrate our love of hoops and our community. Fans, staff, media members, photographers, players, coaches, officials are ALL a part of this Family and it saddens us that this disease may prevent us from being able to see all of our family members in our normal fashion.

However, things changed two weeks ago. We were deeply saddened by the unconscionable killing of George Floyd, and we have and will continue to share our sympathies with George’s family and all of our community members that are mourning this loss. This stark reminder of the problems we still face as a society when it comes to systemic racism have caused us to reflect upon our own place in the community, and ask ourselves if we as an organization are doing enough to be the positive change that we NEED in the world. BLACK LIVES MATTER.

At a time like this, when our community has experienced great loss and sadness, we want nothing more than to continue to be a place where people can find a sense of community and camaraderie around our common interests. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we internally have these conversations about what we can do for our community while keeping everyone’s best interests at heart.

Here is what we have to say about the immediate future

  • We will be partnering with organizations that share our values and are pursuant to the eradication of all forms of systemic racism.
  • We will be reaching out to our athletes and coaches about possible avenues for competition in 2020.
  • We are researching live streaming possibilities if we cannot have fans safely at our events in 2020.

Finally: We want to give special thanks to all our TCPA Family members that have been active in the community during this time. Your leadership is greatly appreciated and we are committed to helping create the change that we need.

THANK YOU

The Elam Ending, coming to the TCPA in 2020

The TCPA will be using the Elam Ending for the 2020 season. If you are not familiar with the Elam Ending, essentially the game will end when a team reaches a certain score rather than when the clock hits 0:00. The Elam Ending was created by Nick Elam and brought to fruition by The Basketball Tournament. "The Ending" has now grown adding recreational leagues, the NBA ALL Star Game and now the TCPA. Although we may tweak how exactly we implement the system, the popular basketball twist will be making its TCPA debut on Opening Night.

How it works for us:

We will continue to play four 10 minute quarters, but at the first dead ball with under 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, we will determine a "Score To Win" by adding 10 points to the leading team's score. For example, say Dr. Dish is leading Hybrid Nation 90-86 when the first dead ball with under 4 minutes to play occurs. At that moment, the Score to Win will be set by taking Dr. Dish's 90 points and adding 10. So, the Score to Win will be 100 points, and the first team to get to 100 points wins the game.
